In October 2017, the catastrophic Tubbs Fire swept through Northern California, ultimately becoming one of the most destructive wildfires in state history. Amidst the chaos and devastating loss, a story of near-impossible bravery emerged from Sonoma County - the story of a 1.5-year-old Great Pyrenees named Odin.
A Heartbreaking Decision
When the firestorm struck in the middle of the night, Roland Hendel and his family woke up to an apocalyptic scene: exploding propane tanks, black smoke, and fierce, shifting “Diablo Winds” rapidly encircling their property. They had only minutes to evacuate. While the family could fit their cats and other dogs into the car, they didn’t have a trailer or the time required to load their eight bottle-fed rescue goats. Hendel desperately tried to coax Odin, their livestock guardian dog, into the vehicle. But Odin flatly refused. Determined to protect his flock at all costs, the young dog planted his paws and anchored himself to the helpless goats. With embers raining down, Hendel had to make a gut-wrenching choice. He opened the pasture gates to give the animals a running chance, looked at his loyal dog, and said, “Okay Odin, take care of the goats. You’ll be fine.” The family sped off into the smoke, weeping and certain they had just sentenced Odin to an agonizing death.
Facing the Inferno
Left entirely on his own as a 1000°C inferno tore through the hillside, Odin did not run. Instead, he took Roland’s final command to heart. As the fires encircled the pasture, Odin relied on his guardian instincts. He gathered the panicked goats and herded them to a high, rocky outcropping in the center of the pasture. Because this area was sparse of heavy brush, it acted as a natural firebreak. Odin pressed the animals tightly against a stone wall to shield them from the intense radiant heat and blinding smoke.
A Miracle Amidst the Ashes
Days later, when evacuation orders lifted, the Hendel family returned to the property. The sight was devastating; their home, barn, and structures had been completely leveled and reduced to an ash-covered moonscape. But as they looked out over the blackened ruins, they saw a flash of movement - a wagging tail. Odin emerged from the smoke, limping and exhausted. His beautiful white coat was singed orange, his whiskers were melted, his eyes were irritated by smoke, and his paw pads were painfully burned. Yet, he was proudly leading his flock. Every single one of the eight rescue goats was alive and unharmed.
An Expanded Flock
The miracle did not end there. Huddled closely within Odin’s protective circle were several wild baby deer. During the terror of the firestorm, the young deer had fled down from the hills. Rather than driving the intruders away, Odin adopted the orphaned wildlife into his herd, sheltering them through the worst night of their lives.
Legacy of a Hero
Odin’s story quickly spread worldwide, turning him into an international symbol of absolute loyalty, courage, and selfless love. Though he passed away peacefully a few years later in 2021, his extraordinary spirit lives on. He proved that when the world is at its worst, love and duty can stand firm against the flames.
